Meet Maija
How do you say your name?
Click here to hear a pronunciation of my name. Both Maija and my maiden name, Cirulis, are Latvian.
My family
I am the proud parent of two wonderful kids. Jackson is a 5th grader at Field School. My daughter, Reagan, is currently enrolled at Meadowbrook in 4th grade, after attending Country School. She enjoys playing soccer and has recently developed a love of acting, thanks to the Weston Friendly Society. My husband of 14 years, Matt, works at Berkshire Partners.
Becoming a "Westonite"
I came to Weston in 2018 and it quickly became home. Raised in a military family, I spent my youth moving frequently. I was born in Alaska, but also lived in Michigan, California, and Oregon. As an adult I traded small, mostly rural towns for the big city living of Chicago, New York, and London. When my husband took a job with Berkshire Partners after almost a decade in England, we wanted someplace we could raise our children for the long term. While the public schools were the primary reason we chose our town, we have come to value the small-town feel and open spaces of Weston. However, it has been getting involved in the community that has helped me put down roots and made me feel like a "Westonite".
My involvement with our Public Schools
I have always been a very active parent at my children's schools. Currently I am co-chair of the Weston SEPAC. I also sit on the PTO Board and have been a room parent for many years. As my son attends Field School, I attend the monthly Field School Council meetings. In addition, I previously served on the PTO's Creative Arts Committee.
What have you done on the Recreation Commission?
Since being elected to the Weston Recreation Commission I have been a very hard working and active member. Currently, one of our largest and highest profile projects is the renovation of Memorial Pool. This has been a multi-year project involving funding requests at multiple town meetings and working with many of our town boards. We hope to bring our final funding request to a vote at a town meeting later this year. I have been the primary person leading financial modeling and revenue projections on this project, including presenting to the Finance Committee and gaining their approval.
In addition to the pool project I have worked on updating the rental policies for the Weston Community Center, collaborating with the Council on Aging to address signage issues, worked to connect Recreation Summer Camps with Weston Schools Extended School Year programs, and helped introduce youth recreation classes for children with disabilities. I also performed a departmental budget analysis to help our commission think strategically about our programs and how our funding is allocated.
Serving our town on the Recreation Commission has not only been personally rewarding, but also enabled me to better understand our town government and interact with a broad cross-section of Weston residents. My time on the Recreation Commission has uniquely prepared me for serving on School Committee. While I believe the work Recreation Commission does is important to our town, our schools are a higher priority. Thus I look forward to the opportunity to use my skills and experience to make Weston Schools even stronger.
What do you do for fun?
In my free time I enjoy playing tennis and cheering on the University of Michigan in almost any sport. I also love to travel and have an obsession with planning Disney World vacations.
